Disclaimer...this post is going to be a bit long so that I can explain! And let me tell you up front that I have been doing this with Kiva for years.
This company, Kiva, oversees microfinance programs. In a nutshell, people loan money to entrepreneurs in third world countries who are either starting a business or trying to expand a business in order to support their families, or send kids to school, etc. Through the Kiva website, an individual may need a loan of $300. Several people 'sign up' through Kiva to loan as little as $25, and when the loan amount is fully funded, the loan begins being paid back.
For a short time, Kiva is allowing people to 'loan' $25 to any person on the site without actually paying anything out of your own pocket. A philanthropist is funding this to show people how it works. You will need to join (free) and then you can choose the individual that you would like to 'loan' the funds to.
Normally, when you loan your own money, Kiva lets you know when part of it (or all) is paid back and you can opt to reloan that money to someone else, or get the money back in your pocket.
I have loaned seventeen times! In each case, the money was paid back, and I was able to support someone who wanted to work for what they are getting.
This is not a handout by any means. Kiva has companies in the countries where they loan to oversee the loans.
